I took quite a few photos while we were in Auckland:

Trip to the Imagine Cup 2007 NZ Final in Auckland

Here is the post on my blog about the trip:

T4 to go to NZ Finals!

 Huge thanks to:

  • Microsoft NZ
  • The judges
  • The other teams for providing the competition (all your projects sound awesome)
  • Our mentors: Mark & Nathan
  • University of Otago Information Science department
  • and of course our friends, family & classmates for supporting us 🙂

T4 & the not so hot presentation…

6 June, 2007

We came, we bored the judges to death then they ate us alive 🙂

You can probaby still see our remains out the corners of their mouths.

  • We hadn’t practiced
  • Our slides were terrible
  • 2 of us were reading straight off our notes (& you could really tell)
  • Our research was missing
  • We assumed the judges wouldn’t be technical hence our architecture diagram was a waste of space
  • We’re pretty sure their fangs were dripping with venom when we were describing our future plans for the app
  • oh & one of the judges yawned

Yes, the judges were really direct which was awesome. There’s nothing worse than being told it was ok when it was clearly not.

We are thankful for the things that went right 🙂

  • We all made it on time (no one got taken out by a bus — yet, if you know Dunedin you know what we mean)
  • We all wore the Imagine Cup t-shirt
  • No one got “stage fright”
  • The demo worked without any problems!
  • The judges were still awake at the end and they asked reasonable questions and gave us excellent feedback. (Although we can’t help wondering if we could’ve got some of this ealier from our mentors)
  •  Huge thanks to the University ITS people who let us use the Video Conference room and helped us setup.

Note: this post is Jen’s observation of the event & does not represent the whole team. References to the judges having fangs and eating us is metaphorical and added for dramatic effect – we love the judges 🙂

T4 & the presentation prep…

4 June, 2007

So today is Monday 4th June – tomorrow we will have our presentation at 1pm and it will be the first day of EXAMS!

Working in our favour today we “celebrate” Queens’s Birthday so it is a holiday and there is no one around. Unfortunately Hamish & David both have exams this week, Jen has exam next Saturday (worth 70% mind) & Chaks is Masters’ students so no exams for him.

We have been working like busy bees to get our presentation together. Because the judges are in Auckland (we are in Dunedin -go look at a map) we are doing it via video conference. Arrangements were made for us to use the University’s very expensive video conference facilities. We have already had one practice with Microsoft NZ to test connection and figure our how the heck we are going to demo our software – hint: we need three laptops at least. The nice people who work in the AV centre here have been really helpful.

The structure of our presentation will be similar to our specification with the addition of a demo:

  • Jen will introduce the team, the problem and how it is relevant to education
  • Hamish will talk about our solution and how it solves the problem
  • Chaks will explain how our solution works and what tech we used to create it
  • David & Chaks will give a demo
  • David will talk about our future plans for the solution
  • Jen will conclude

We have read on many blogs that it is not so good for the whole team to speak but in this case our team is very close and all are knowledgeable and confident speakers. As long as we don’t screw it up it should flow nice.

We have also been quizzing each other with questions we think the judges might ask 🙂

T4 Hard at Work

T4’s Documentation Reviewed…

3 June, 2007

We waited with anticipation as the judges review came back for our documentation.

  • They said our docs were good (ha, the V worked!)
  • Our project is interesting
  • We were a “favourite” — whatever that means

The only thing we messed up was not clearly identifying how our solution solved our problem. We also need to say what future our project has – what we would do to get to the finals.

Pretty awesome really and we can nail the unclear stuff in the presentation on Tuesday 🙂

All Done!

1 June, 2007

It’s 7.37am and we have submitted our executables and documentation. So we are finished for this round. All that could be done has been done 🙂
